# I have a motor with a non-excitation-operated electromagnetic brake, and I want to switch the power to both the motor and the electromagnetic brake on and off using a single contact. Are there any problems with this?

The overrun will be larger.

Using a single contact to switch the motor ON/OFF (Figure 1) has the advantage of simplifying the control circuit and reducing the number of relays.
However, even after the power is turned off, the magnetic energy remaining in the motor causes current to continue flowing through the electromagnetic brake for approximately 50 msec, increasing the time until activation and increasing the amount of overrun.

Therefore, for applications where minimizing overrun is important, the motor and electromagnetic brake should be controlled by separate relays (Figure 2). Note that the three-phase 200V type cannot be used with simplified wiring; please use standard wiring.
